Sunday, November 4, 1923

A cloudy morning. Rain all evening. Jim and I and the little children staid at home all day. Lelia come this morning and cleaned up the dishes for me. I got dinner. Ben and Henry went to Strait Stone to preaching. Come home and eat dinner. Then went to Lee Brumfields and spent the evening. The children has had a good day playing. I have wrote Carrie a letter to night. I had planed to go up there this evening but it rained so we could not go.

Monday, November 5, 1923

A cloudy morning and some rain. I think it rained most all night. The men stripped tobacco. The children went to school. Joe Edmons brought them home. I was glad for them. I cut three pair of drawers for Mabel and made one. They are two large for her. I have bin thinking of Kate to day. It was so rough that Ben could not haul a load for her. I hate so bad for her to have to leave the neighborhood. I had a letter from Carrie today. Was glad to hear but sorry that the children are sick.

A cloudy bad day. Ben went to Renan. He was one of the judges of the election. Jim stripped tobacc [sic] most of the day. Lee B. come for me and Jim went with us to Renan. Mr Kent brought us home. Mrs Kent voted. Mabel and I fixed to go if any one should come. I bought some cloth to make Mabel some dresses of. Kate was at the store. I was glad to see her. Ben has not come home yet. I am anxious to hear from the elections. The chimney burnt out tonight. It scared the children some. It is raining hard now.

A cloudy windy day. The men stripped tobacco most of the day. Ben carried Mr. Elders calf home this morning. He got to the corn and eat all that he could. Hope it won't hurt him. The children went to school. Edna and Franklin come home complaining of tooth ache and head ache. I hope they may be better by morning. Mabel has a bad cough. Ben has gone to the school house to night to a meeting of the committee. They want to make some way to pay for the school house. I hope that they may. I made Mabel a dress today.

To day is Bens birth day

A disagreeable day. Colde and windy. Ben went to take a load of furniture to Java for Kate Harvey. He has not come home and we think he will stay all night over there. I hope he may. Jim stripped some tobacco. The children went to school. The three youngest are all most laid up with colds. Jim had a letter from Nellie today. She said that they were all bad off with colds. I have done a little sewing today. The children was late getting in from school. They had a ball game over at the school house this evening.

A clear colde day. Ben staid at Dr. Wiggintons last night. He come by the mill and got flour at Johnsons Mill. He got home a bout two oclock today. Jim stripped tobacco. I sewed a little. I killed a chicken for dinner. Just at dark to night Jim Power and Lawson and Mildred and Elizabeth and Raymon come. They brought some beef they weighed at Reynolds. The [sic] eat supper here. The little girls stayed all night and will stay a day or two.

A good day. The men stripped tobacco. Ben went to Renan and got some things that was bought at Kate's sale. Ben and Henry has gone to Mr. Mayhews to night. The children here and the Power children have had a good time playing to day. Mabel is got the tooth ache tonight. I cooked a possome today. Some of the folks eat it and some would not. I got a letter from Carrie today. She said that they were working on the road by there yet.

Sunday, November 11, 1923

A good day. We all staid at home until twelve. Then Henry went to Mr. Emersons. Jim and Lizzie come and eat dinner with us. I was glad to see them. I am always glad to have any of the children come. Jim and Lizzie went to George Blains from here. Henry carried them on the car. I am glad that Henry can run the car. Mabel is as cross as can be. I hope she will not get sick tonight.

Monday, November 12, 1923

A cloudy day. Rain tonight. The men stripped tobacco all day. Would of loaded the wagon if it had bin a good evening. Mildred Power went with Edna to school. Elizabeth stayed with Mabel. I was glad that she did stay. I cooked beef and cabbage for dinner. Lawson Power come for the children at dark tonight. He eat supper with us. I hope they got home ok. We will miss them. Hope that they my may come a gain when the weather is warm so that Maybel [sic] can go where she pleases. The children here are at the dining room playing rook.

A colde disagreeable day. The children went to school. Heard yesterday there was a new baby at Clack Hubbands. Jim and Ben loaded the wagon with tobacco and started to Gretna today. I hope that they are at Marvin's tonight. It is so lone some here and they both gone. Heard today that Will King was hurt by his truck turning over on him. He was near Gretna. I don't know any thing to write. No one comes to see me and I can't go to see any body.

A good day. The children went to school. Ben and Jim was at Gretna today. They staid at Marvin's last night and eat breakfast there this morning. They unloaded their tobacco last night. Marvin and Carrie was at Mc Laulin[?] until bed time. Mabel and I eat dinner by ourselves. Jim come at one oclock. Then I fixed dinner for him. He come with Mr. Booker. I was glad when he come. Ben come with the team about sun down. I was very glad when he come. Lelia come and got some salit this evening. Henry and Jo Edmons and Ben has gone hunting.

A good day. The men stripped tobacco most of the day. John Ward went to the mill with corn the first that has bin carried this fall. I am glad to get some new meal. The squirrel got out of his cage to day. Guess he wont be seen any more a bout here. Ben turned two opposomes loos today and gave John one. Henry got a letter from Julia Brumfield today. Mabel has bin sweet today. Lelia washed for us today. I wrote two letters today. Did not get any letters today. Hope we may hear from Nellie tomorrow.

A good day. The boys stripped tobacco all day. The children went to school. Henry and Joe Edmons went to Strait Stone tonight. Said they were going to pray[?] meeting. Henry went to Renan this evening for coffee. He drove the car. I sent to Denia for butter today. She sent me tow [sic] and a half pounds. I was glad to get it. I stay here and don't see any one and no one to talk to but Mabel. She is as sweet and good as she can be.

Saturday. A colde clear day. The men stripped tobacco all day. Henry hauled some wood tonight. Henry and Joe Edmons went to John Emersons to a social. Ben has gone to Johnson Reynols. He had a letter from Kate Harvey. She is visiting Virginia Thomson at Welch W. Va. I was surprised to hear that she was there. Franklin said I must write that Henry caught a hawk in his steel trap this morning. The children are all bathed and want to go to Marvin's tomorrow. I am a fraid the day will be so colde that they cant go.

Sunday, November 18, 1923

A good day. Ben and the children and I went to Marvin's. Carrie had a good dinner. Fried chicken and tomatoes and macaronie and chees caned peaches and fruit cake. It was all good and nice. This evening Carrie and I and Henry and Reese went to see my sister Nannie Bennett. She has bin sick and looks bad now but I hope she may soon get well. All of Nannies daughters was there. I was glad to see them. We come by Tims[or Jims?] and talked with them a minutes.[sic] We got home in good time. I got supper. Ben and Henry has gone some where. To St. Andrews I guess.

Monday, November 19, 1923

A good day. The men worked on tobacco all day. Ben went to Altavista and carried some tobacco. It solde low. He was not pleased with the sales. Thomas Callans died this morning from a lick that Will Dickerson hit him. I am very sorry that it happened. This evening after Henry come home from school all the children and I went to Strait Stone dealing. I could not get any land. Little Avis Emerson is staying with Edna to night. Ben has gone to Mayhews tonight. We are bringing all the water from the spring up in the field.

Tuesday, November 20, 1923

A good day. Jim and Ben stripped tobacco. Finished a cureing and loaded the car ready to start to Gretna in the morning. Thomas Callans was buried today. The children went to school. Edna went to Mr. George Emersons tonight. I think the Emerson girls are fine. Hattie Gilbert stoped here a few minutes today. She looks badly. I hope she may get well soon. Mabel is bad off with colde. I let her get out two much yesterday. I think Mr. Mayhew and the girls has come to play carrums[?]. I guess Ben and Henry are glad.

A good day. We got up early this morning. Ben had gone to Gretna . I was surprised as I had not heard any thing about his starting up so early. Jim and John stripped tobacco all day. Ben come home by eleven oclock. Heard today that Bruce Reynols wife has a son. The Emerson children has a lot of school children with them tonight. Two of the Worsham children one Milam one Brumfield. Henry and Jo Edmons has gone down there to night. Jim sent off an ax helve today. I sent some goods to make Edna[she stopped in midsentence]

Thursday, November 22, 1923

A beautiful day. The men stripped tobacco. They are going to load the car tonight. Mabel and I went up to the barn this evening. I could not be any help so we come to the house. Had not bin here long when Millie Reynols come. I was so glad that she come. She brought a few apples. They were very good. The children went to school. Jim and I got a letter from Nellie. They were getting on fine from what she said. We had a foot washing here tonight Mabel Franklin and I. The children has gone to sleep. Mabel is much better of her cold today and I am so glad.

Friday, November 23, 1923

A rainy morning. Ben had his car loaded ready to go to Gretna. Did not go until this evening. He went and come before sundown. He was pleased with the sales. Jim and John stripped tobacco all day. I sewed a little. Cooked three time and washed dishes and churned. I make all sorts of mistakes such as cross the wrong letter. The tobacco that Ben carried off today was mine and Johns. I was very glad to get my part of the advance. Mabel has bin cross part of the day. She is not well. The children went to school. Did not get wet much.

Saturday, November 24, 1923

A good day. The men stripped tobacco all day. I got dinner. Then Henry and Franklin and I went to Gretna. We done some shopping. Then went to see Carrie a little while. Found them well enough to be about. I was glad of that. We got home in good time to get water and wood and get supper. Henry drove the car very good I thought. I am so glad that he can drive the car. I hope that nothing wont happen to make me afraid.

A good day. We all staid at home except Henry. He went in [camel?]. some where we don't know where. Carrie and the children come to see us. I was so glad to see them. Carrie helped me get dinner. She said that Marvin was not well. I do hope he may soon be well. They think they have a hard time and they do in some ways but if any thing sould[sic] happen to Marvin serious then they would see a hard time shure[sic]. Jim and Ben caught a squirel this evening and put him in a cage. Will try to tame him.

A clear morning. Cloudy this evening and rain tonight. Ben went to Gretna this evening with tobacco. Got home a while be fore night. Jim and John stripped all day. The children went to school. Mrs. Booker went to Lynch Burg yesterday. Come home this evening. Ray Booker come with Franklin home and staid until his mother got home. I have bin up all day but have not felt good all day. Ben got me a pair of shoes today. I got a card from Hellen Brumfield today wishing me a good Thanks giving day.

A good day. Cleared up last night. The men has shucked corn all day. The tobacco was dry. I had cabbage for dinner. I stewed a pumpkin that Carrie gave me. Think I will make some pies for Thanks Giving dinner. Hattie made soap here today. I hope it will be good. The children went to school. I am a bout a sleep and git[?] and go to bed.

A good day. The men stripped tobacco all day. The children went to the school house. They [sic] school broke up at noon. Some of the teachers li[?]ve a good distance. They went home for Thanks giving day. I dressed a hen for our turkey. Carrie gave me a pumpkin. I have cooked it. Guess they will work here. They can be as thankful at work as they could and not work. Ben and Henry has gone to Mr. Mayhew's to play games. Mabel had a bad cough. I wanted to go to see Kate Hubband this evening but did not get off. Henry come by Renan and got some meat.

Thursday, November 29, 1923

A cloudy day and rain this evening and tonight. Jim worked on his tobacco all day. Ben and John Ward and Henry cut and sawed wood this morning and stripped tobacco this evening. John Ward brought two little baskets here this morning. He made them for Carrie Smith. I cooked a hen for dinner and baked pies. Carrie gave me a small pumpkin, all that I have had this fall. We have got the water to drink from the spring up in the field. The Children hate to bring it so far. I hope that they will dig out the branch soon.

A rainy day. Clear tonight. Ben moved the cureing of tobacco that was packed in the house that John Ward lives in. Put it in the barn ready to strip. They stripped what they could today. Mr. Mayhew and two of the children was here tonight. They played games. Mayhew said he heard that Will Dickerson had bin caught. I hope is the truth. They children has had a good time playing with paper dolls. Franklin tryed to tie tobacco. Jim got a letter from his folks. They were well.

A beautiful day. They men stripped tobacco except Henry. Ben has gone some where tonight. I hope his car did not give him trouble. We think the children has [deletion] chicken pox. It is not hurting them much yet. Ben got a letter from Kate Harvey today. She is at Welch yet. I would be so glad to see her. Alma sent the baby dresses by mail today. They fit he[r] nicely and are very pretty. She wore one of them to the barn for her father to see. Well it is eleven oclock . I think I will go to bed.

A good day. We all was at home for dinner. Then Henry and I went to Johnson Reynols. They were not at home. Then we went to Clack Hubbands. I was glad to go. I had wanted to go for some time. They seemed to be getting on fine. They have a fine little baby. He is not named yet. Mr. Booker come while I was gone. I would of liked to see her. Think I will go to see her soon. I am so glad that Henry can run the car.

Monday, December 3, 1923

A good day. Ben and Jim got up this morning at 4 o'clock loaded the car. Henry and Ben loaded Ben's car and Mr. Booker and Jim loaded Mr. Bookers. They eat breakfast and started to Gretna. They went and unloaded and was back by nine o'clock. Loaded and went back by twelve o'clock. Ben got home by ten[?]. They are stripping on Jims last cureing. I talked with Effie B. this evening. She has bin to Black Burg. She said that Willie B[a?]rns was sick. I am so sorry. Hope se may get well soon. Mabel and [I] went to Mr. Bookers.
