Dear Mr. Barclay

A short note to let you have my apologies about my last Saturday night in Palo Alto. [Grameris?] told me that you were about ready for a little "beer or bourbon" drinking. But I received a wire to report out here on Monday morning at 8 A.M.; so had to take a train for L.A. on Saturday night and consequently was unable to call you. yet been unconfirmed, and I sincerely hope that it is not true. If so, I think you will bear me out in saying that is is proof of the old adage that "only the good die young." If anything else comes through I'll let you know.

Phoenix is quite a bit better than that damn state of Florida. While even here it isn't idyllic, but it is better in that I will be able to get hours once in a while and see the folks. Also a few places to go during our off hours. Jim McClatchey is stationed here instructing and sends his regards.

Well, thats about all for the present. If you can spare the time, drop me a line and let me know the reaction to Stanfords big game victory. Your sincere friend John W. {Shorr?}
