Dear Miss Hull

I have seen lots of things since I wrote to you last. We went to Nice after leaving Paris and had a very enjoyable time as the American Fleet was at Villefranche and they gave dances every Thursday. From Nice we determined to go to Constantinople. We stayed at Venice five days and had

When we arrived at Constantinople we all thought we were in the strangest country we had every been in before. No two turks seem to be dressed alike because their clothes are of so many different colors. We became acquainted with Pangiris Bey, one of the Sultan's ade-de-campo and he took us to the Treasury where we saw diamonds literally by the bushel and one emerald as large as your hand, bowls full of emeralds,

a delightful time. Three mornings in succession we took gondolas and hired a boat load of singers and went down to the Rialto to hear them sing. We spent Christmas in Vienna staying there altogether ten days, going to the Opera almost every evening and seeing one of the best Opera company's and Ballets in the world. At Bucharest we spent New Year's day starting on the fifth of January at five in the morning for Varna reaching the Danube at about five at a place called Giurgevo (you must know that for 10 days every thing had been blocked with snow) there we took sleighs and drove over the ice to a small island where two open boats were waiting to take the passengers across the river between the floating ice for about a mile where at Roustohouk the train for Varna was waiting

rubies and pearls and carpets of gold covered with precious stones as close as they could be put on. After we had seen three rooms out of the six filled with just such things, we were taken to one of the Sultan's private kiosks and given coffee in cups with gold holders set with diamonds and after this a delicious

Mr. Nash lost his valise in crossing the Danube and now any thing that can't be found happened to be in that, it must have been as large as Noah's ark and contained the treasures of the Indies. We are all sorry to hear that you are sick and hope you will be well soon. Best wishes from all and love from me. Leland P.S. I had a letter from Aimee yesterday they are all well. The "we" with the cross after it is Mr. Nash's work.

mixture of preserved rose leaves. We saw two other beautiful palaces but it would take a month to tell you all about them so I will wait till I get home. At Athens we had a very nice time meeting Mr & Mrs Schuyler, General Beale's daughter and Dr Schlieman and his wife. I bought a good many antiquities for my museum and papa gave me 4000 francs for its support. We saw lots of beautiful and wonderful things in Greece and enjoyed our stay very much. We had a very smooth passage from Corinth to Brindisi and I arrived at Naples without having been sick from Varna to here. Papa is pretty well except for his stiffness and does a great deal in the way of sight seeing. Mama and myself are not well just for the present because we have been going it too hard
