January 1st 1852 Thursday. A Beautiful day. The cold weather seemed to pull away with the old year, and this morning seems pleasant as spring. The moles are at work and the birds singing I am at work at a sleigh Went at night to writing school Recd a letter from Eliz A. Wilson

---2-- Cloudy in morning but clears up -- John hauled wood.

---3-- Looks stormy and snows Went to Elk after iron but it was not there. Milly still at Mr. Morris's. Brought Mr Price a barrel of mackerel Snowing as I came home

Sunday 4th Rain in morning. Milly came home. I took letter & paper to Miss Billington and dined there Went to see mother and took suppor with her.

5 Pleasant - put lock on Short's wagon. Looks like storm at night --- 6 -- Rain and sleet & snow A very disagreeable day --Mended stool(?) ----- 7 ---- Went to see Mr. Levis in morn ing and to Elkton. Note at 90 days Came home in sleigh with V. D.J. came down at night in sleigh --- 8th -- Worked in shop - took Milly and Mary & H. Jesse H. Simpers there.

Jan. 9th 1852 Snow still on ground, and sleighs running briskly. Dr. Richard Brookings died ----10--- Went to Elkton to see about iron. Much talk about Tom McCreary and the negro case in Baltimore. ----11---- Sunday Robert and Harriet here. Sleighs still running. Dr. Brookings buried at North East. John W. Simpers child buried at the Union 12 Very cold. Mary Ann Mean died. Rachel went to Elkton after iron. Hyland P. called at night & D.J. & M. Eders Todd brought beef

13th Still very cold. Short brought wood. Worked in shop. ---14-- Painted sleigh in kitchen Had bad head ache ---15-- Weather cold - still unwell with headache - Sale of Mr Morris's property Martha came down at night in sleigh - William Miller died ----16--- More moderate - worked in shop - new sleigh finished Went to writing school -----17 Saturday -- Went to Elkton with Mr. Price McCreary at home- Road more bare of snow

Sunday Jan. 15 1852 Snowing all day. Read several numbers of Delaware Register relative to early settle ment of Del & Md -----19---- Deep snow on ground. High wind drifting the snow. very cold and roads little broken. Worked in shop. Coldest night this season pump froze tight, and clock stopped ----- 20 ---- Extremely cold. Jonathan could not work for the cold Mr & Mrs Morris came up in sleigh. Wrote to A Evans and Wm Tyson. Sleighs running.
