the Oblivians s/t Static Party (Sympathy 10") (In the Red 7") rock' n' roll holiday (Negro live LP) Although I have yet to hear a recording that does this band's live shows justice, these records are the only way to get a regular fix without moving to Memphis (which isn't a bad idea, actually). But I'LL TELL YA WHAT! Not one track on any Oblivians record has ever failed to get me hoppin' around and screamin' along. You will too. (They also have a number of other 7"s out and an LP on Crypt, and another 10" on Sympathy). --La Suprema.

Impala Kings of the Strip (Estrus 10") One of the many find bands coming out of Memphis today, Impala has the soul and the swank that is missing in bands like the Makers and the Blues Explosion. Not that they sound like either of those bands rather they belt out a beautiful mix of surf/lounge instrumental genius tempered by an uncanny sense of dynamic balance. Whew! [Since I wrote this review, I received the horrible news that this band is no more.] --La Suprema.

Willie Nelson Red Headed Stranger (Columbia lp 1975) This is a classic record. I grew up on it. It's basically a collection of songs arranged into a western opera of sorts. It's beautiful and even has one song where Willie sings jazz. Check out this record if you're into this kind of thing. Look for a really cheap copy at 1/2 Price Books or Goodwill, there are a bunch of stupid fucks out there who ditched this reccord sometime in the late eighties thinking that Willie Nelson wasn't cool anymore or something. Go figure. --La Suprema.

I RODE IN A TOUR VAN FOR ONE DAY

Last spring Susan and I came up with one of our great schemes. A trip. We got plane tickets to fly into Minneapolis / St. Paul and out of Chicago. The plan was to visit my mother in St. Paul, catch the Grifters at the First Avenue in Minneapolis, hitch a ride with them (best case scenario) or hop a bus (worst case) to Chicago, see the Grifters again, and hang out with my brother there, since he was stuck there until the semester was over. The plan was set and we were about to start packing when disaster struck. Susan was involved

AND THAT WAS JUST ENOUGH.

Scott had promised me he'd do what he could to get Ben and Carl in to the club (the Empty Bottle is 21+ and Ben and Carl were 16). When they got there no one was watching the door, so they just walked in, but soon they were spotted. They explained that they were with me and I explained that I was with the Grifters and Scott explained that they were cool and the guy marked up their hands real good and instructed them to stay at least 20 feet from the bar at all times and to go to the light booth if the cops came and to say that they worked there. Ben and Carl were fucking thrilled! Especially when Tripp remembered to thank them during the show for running lights. I left them and went into the back room to drink. The room was full of pot smoke and smoke smoke and every time someone knocked on the door I got worried. Each time though, it was the club owner coming to see if the bands needed anything. They would ask for more beer or whatever, but finally someone asked for some tequila and the owner brought a whole bottle.

The Grifters played one of the best shows I've ever seen a band play. It was just incredible. I was having a little trouble standing up, and they were up there doing their thing better than I can explain.

I couldn't believe it. The only sign that they were drunk was at the end of the set when Dave couldn't get his guitar off and cursed, "Tequila."

I hung out for the rest of the weekend with my brother and his friends. We went to see one of the Grifter's instores the next day and just fucked around in Chicago. I really miss that place.

Right: The e-mail Carl + Ben wrote to their friend Marisa in the wee hours of 7 May 1995.

Above: on the way back from the Blackout REcords instore. On the el platform, (L-R) Carl, Marcel, Ben, Katie & Chris Hamer, heir to the Hamer Guitar fortune and estate.

we didn't see the grifters... JUST KIDDING! WE SAW THE GRIFTERS! WE TALKED TO THEM! THEY RULE! I LOVE THE GRIFTERS! THEY ARE GODS! it was so cool. It rocked my world.. okay uhh.... it's like 20 hours later now. we saw the grifters again at this tiny record shop, and their bassist came up to me with their new ep and said, "hey carl, do you have this?" and i was like "no..." and he said "do you want it?' and i was like "yeah!" and he gave it to me. IT WAS NEAT. ben's sister from texas is here. she is old, like 20 and stuff, and she got us into the show. this guy came up to me and ben and said 'you're not 21, are you?" and we were like "no... we're with her" and we pointed to ben's sister, and she got scott who's one of the singer for the grifters, and he told the proprieter of the empty bottle some stuff, and we got to stay. the grifters = YAY!. and tony had this surprise party that was quite lame, and we just sat there for a while and i ate pizza and had POP and sat there and some people smoked weed!!! DANGEROUS!! uh-oh! and we're back now. i'm gonna get the grifters cd i just got and listen to it more. we listened to it at tony's house, and they had a black light people were doing crack, no wait, not crack... im not sure ,ask the rabbit. After we left tony's we journeyed tp carl's (oh this isn't carl.) um... there we saw John(Shudder) uh we went to the basement and chriss tried to play a game of motorbike. denied. um Andy came down and told us about is escapade to the barbar. he had a 1:30 appointment and the dude who was cutting his hair wasn;t done with the previous customer untill ten till two. the dude took an hour trying to cut andy's hair so it would go a different way it didn;t look any different than it did this morning...... uh now ben and chris are playing starcom and Marcel is a MONKEY!!!!!! he got his feet stuck in between the pipes and got stuck hanging upsidedown. the grifters were cool.. monkeys are cool. --- katie. yesterday on the way home we had this whacked cab driver, and i don't think he's been in america very long, and he was like "there are other places in chicago that have bands." and we were like "oh" and then he said "some have two or three bands sometimes" and we were like "yeah..." it was pretty weird. he was annoying and it was three in the morning, but i felt like i had to be nice to him, cause he was nice. and stuff. the grifters are nice guys. the record store we went to today was cool. i want get some money and buy some 7"s, cause there might be some good music on them and stuff. the new grifter cd is awesome. i'll tape it for you. school is almost over. we get out like june 3rd, not including finals. the grifters consume lots of alchohol, and they were drunk last night, and today they were drinking! tomorrow Chlorine is practicing. EXCITEMENT CITY!! UHH THIS IS OVER. I HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO WRITE, oh yeah, last night, me and ben were both wearing sonic youth shirts, and ben's sister was like " you look so cute in your sonic youth shirts" and she got drunk too!!!!!! !UH !O!O!OP!!1!!!!! okay, that's all i think. okay bye carl, katie, and NO ONE ELSE> okay beye@!!!
