My dear Nannie

It is 3:45 P.M. sitting at my drawing desk supposed to be and I am drawing- but I have finished my model and am waiting for Prof. Clark to come around and criticize it, so have nothing else to scribble you a line on but this scrap of paper which I have spoiled for any drawing purpose. Whether this will amount to enough of a letter to send will depend entirely upon how long it takes Prof. C. to get around the class so I must write fast. Rose has probably told you that I went down Saturday to stay with Mrs. Mabury. Rose felt that her two examinations would keep her too busy to afford the time; so I had to go alone. Went down on the 8:70 train with Miriam Maclaren. M......Then went out to Jeanie's - all the rest of the family being in S.F. for the day. Carlotta having a yellow satin gown made to wear at Eva Hawkings' wedding as she is to be her bridesmaid. Won't she look regal? I had a very pleasant afternoon with Jeanie, we went driving - and got back just as Mrs. Mabury arrived - Carlotta and Bella staying until a later train. Sunday afternoon Carlotta, Bella and I - with a Miss Phelps went to drive. We found ourselves out by the Bartsows' new home and so we went in and had a very pleasant call. Grace played for us and so sweetly and soulfully. Their home is built cheaply rough wood finish inside - no plaster - but the beams and odd corners and nooks make a very artistic home. The main room downstairs is is the music room 23 feet long, quite the pride of Grace's heart. I came back on the 8 o'clock train this morning having had a perfectly lovely time. Mrs Bean and "Joel"called Sunday afternoom and Mrs.Bean inquired youraddress saying she was going to writie to you while visiting'Cathe'. What a cultured woman she is! heart culture and mind culture so combined makes a rare woman. She sent her love to you

My dearest Nannie-

Theodora tells me she has written her second letter to you this week and reminds me I am lacking in my record. So doubt she has told you all important events of the week so I shall act as Bulletin Supplement. We are all excited over examination I in French Revolution next Tuesday and my mind is densely befogged in Feudal Rights and Incidents not to mention direct and indirect taxation. Last Monday was rather a gay day for me. Alex Cotton and Howard Trinecto two of Grace Clark's friends were down from the city visiting "Baby (?)" Cotton, and they succeeded in taking up the 2nd and 3rd hours Monday morning by"treating" at Rices - the ice-cream center, and in squandering time generally. I had gone to French the 3rd hour, when there was a knock and Prof. Davidson said some one wished Miss Payne whereupon I walked out to find Grace, Laura, and the three boys, plotting an impromptu watermelon feast to which I immediately went regardless of French. We are reading, by-the-way, "La Mare au Diable" by George Sand a very pretty little story. Monday aftermoon Alice Cowen asked me to go riding in her pretty dogcart, and of course I went as I missed two rides with her before. We had a lovely ride to Menlo Park and around the university. Tuesday, I think it was, that Theodora, Laura, Miriam and I went to an interclass football game. Don't be too shocked to hear that we are all enthusiastic, for the first time in my life I found myself madly applauding. The joke of it is I don't more than half understand the game, and always cheer for any but my own class. I don't remember much about Wednesday so guess I studied. Thursday, squandered most of my morning with Tom, who had just heard from his father. He felt very flush so we went down to "Rices". I

Monday - Evening

Dear Mamma :-

I thought I would wait until I found out what time the train left on Thursday before writing, it is booked to leave at eight thirty and if it gets to the city in time we will come right over - but you know we would return on the quarter to twelve boat and we may not have time to go to Oakland until after the game.

Does Grace want to go with us? If she has no ticket and wants one I may be able to get her one here, if I receive an answer to this by tomorrow

I am invited Thursday by Mrs. Wharton to meet Mrs. Camp.

I'm sorry I won't see Daisy but It's a short time to Christmas.

In Astronomy today We were talking about the Golden number & that led to Easter & Prof [Hersley?] asked if Any one knew how it was settled. There was a long silence & finally I screwed up courage & said that it was the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox. I remembered it from your class.

I have got to study now so good-by until Thursday

Love to Daisy & [Millie?] & Grace - & tell her to write immediately & post it in the post box & I'll get it tomorrow (Wednesday)

night. Ever your loving daughter Hallie
