to receive Twenty five Lashes and do the Duty of Camp Colour Man to the Company for two Weeks Jeremiah Clarkson private in Cap^t W^m Lewis's Company tried Charged with being absent from Roll Call, & being Drunk in his Hut- Pleads Guilty The Court find him Guilty, and Sentance him to receive fifteen Lashes, and be put on Fatigue for one week- The Major Commanding approves of the foregoing Sentences and orders them carried into Effect except in the Case of Leward which he suspends for the present The Corporal punishment will take place this Evening at retreat Beating roll Call- The prisoners will then be Released.

At a General Court martial whereof Col^o Strong is president held on the 5^th Instant and continued by adjournment until the 7^th inclusive - Cap^t W^m Lewis of the third SubLegion was tried upon the following charges

officer in the hearing & View of both officers & privates of the Battalion to which he belongs

Captain Lewis pleads not Guilty- The Court are of oppinon that Cap^t Lewis is Guilty of the 1^st Specification of the first Charge exhibited against him & not of the second and do therefore sentence him to be reprimanded in the Gen^l orders - Its a painfull & disa= greeable task and it is allways with reluctance that the Commander in chief ever attem pts to repremand any officer

but the highly responsible situation obliges him to enforce due sub bordination & to suport every officer in the execution of his duty on all occasions. the charge & specification which Cap^t Lewis has been found Guilty plased his life in the mercy of the Court this curcumstance alone to a feeling mind requires no other reprofe - The Commander in Chief therefor orders that Cap^t W^m Lewis be immediately liberated from his arrest and take charge of his Company
