the hospital to see Ma Mya Chi, whom they
found much better.

July 12, 1922 – Wednesday
Overslept yes. morn. so had no lesson. Pd. Ma
T.M. R15 this a.m., hope she is satisfied. the 7th
standard teacher returned this a.m. & taught
till noon; I then took the Geog. again from 1 to 1:
45 [1:45]. Jen wiped up my floor today. The pani w. [wallah]
is on strike so don't know when we'll get some
water. Wrote this much & then waited for further de-
velopments [developments]. Jen came up to dust about 5 p.m. so
I told him my troubles, in Eng, gestures, & the few
Hindustani words I know, about having no water,
so he got the man up here in short order – grinning
broadly over his success. I read some of the May
World's Work this aft. Unpacked the remaining box
of books, but didn't get them sorted out; wrote my
name on everything, however, that didn't seem to
be so labled already, this bunch is mostly magazines
& deaf material. The sky has been overcast today con-
sequently [consequently] a little cooler. Mrs. E. says they are giving
me a tea next Mon. aft., & came to see if I had any
correspondence cards on which to write the half
dozen (two in many of the houses) invitations,
but I'm out, so offered to go to town tomorrow
to buy some at the press. Also have to go calling
this wk. on native Christians over in the Minga-
laze [Mingalaze] neighborhood; Miss P has spoken of it several
times. Finally got my letter off to Mr. P. at the
press, so hope to find later that I have a small bal-

ance [balance] there after all. N.B. – As an aftermath to the
girl's dramatic parting from her mother, she has even
changed her name!

July 13, 1922 – Thursday
Went to town after my Eng. class – after 10 – this a.m.;
rode to the end of the carline; it goes north, turns
east, then south & finally east again, goes to the
corner of the fort, the southwest, as I figure it out,
along the electric power plant, the railway station,
Civil Hospital & stops at the courts; I omitted the
football grounds & Mingalazè (blessing bazaar.)
Returning I bought postcards at the press for my-
self [myself] in additon to the correspondence cards, &
stamps a the p.o. across the st. at the side. Went to Whiteaways
directly in front, & another printing & stationery
place in the same block; had also stopped at
Rowe's where I got off the tram, but nothing doing
in correspondence cards. Walked from & to the
car – a distance of several blocks. Returned in time
for break. & afterwards wrote out & addressed these
"invites" & took them down to Mrs. E. minus stamps.
Miss P. came in & said we'd better go calling, which
we did via gharry; Mrs. E. couldn't go with us as it
was choir practice; we met the H's going over as we
were leaving. Returned rather late & gave Miss P. all
the gharry hire, as I did before, but she returned half.
Gave Mrs. E. R20 on this mos. board, which is sup-
posed [supposed] to be pd. in advance; laid aside R16 for M.D's
bill which hasn't yet arrived. Got some home mail, in-
cluding [including] two I.J., C.E., Y.C. & Lit. D, letters from Ida at
Prome, who had had a very happy birthday last week,
& from Emma S.T., whose husband will not be
here this yr. after all, but is traveling for a circus
