filiform; base of thorax as wide as elytha;
7. Clavipalpi. 3 first tarsal joints with pellets beneath, last one bifid; antennae term-
inated by a very distinct & perfoliated club; maxilla [arnied?] on the inside by a nail
or [comlom?] tooth.

IV. Trimera
1. Fungicole. Antennae longer than head & thorax united; body oval; thorax [trapezoidal?];
maxillary palpi filiform, terminated by a very large securiform joint
2. Aphidiphage. Body hemispherical; thorax very short transverse; antennae terminate
in a compressed, obconic club, composed of the 3 last joints, and are shorter than
the thorax; last tarsal joint bilobate.
3. Pselaphic. Elytra short, truncate, & do not cover the abdomen; abdomen, short
wide, very obtuse & rounded behind; antennae terminated in a club or are
thickened.

4 jointed; mandibles dentated very projecting.
I. 1. -2 Carabici. maxilla terminates by a simple point or hook; head [usually?] narrower

I. 1. - 3 Hydrocanthari. [Feet?] fitted for rotation; the 4 last [comprened?], ciliated or lameliform
body oval; eyes but slightly prominent; thorax much wider than long;
terminal hook of maxilla [seperated?] from base, those of the extremity of the
tarsi often unequal.
I. 3. Section 1. Sternoxi. Body firm, solid; head plunged up to the eyes in the thorax; antennae
short; anterior legs at a distance from the anterior extremity of the thorax.
I. 3. -1 [Buprestides?] Posterior projection of the prastaernum flattened and not termi-
nated in a laterally compressed point. Posterior angles of thorax
are but slightly or not at all prolonged; last joint of palpi cilindrical [cylindrical]
the others globular or ovoid; most of the tarsal segments dilated & furnished
beneath with pellets
I. 3. -2 Elaterides. Posterior stylet of the praesternum terminates in a laterally comprened
point, frequently somewhat arcuated & unidentate; when placed on the back
they have the faculty of bounding upwards.
I. 3. Section 2. Malacodermi. Head covered at base by the thorax; praesternum not dilated;
body soft, flexible.
I. 3. - 3. [Iebriontites?]. Mandibles terminate in a simple or entire point; palpi of equal thickness
or more slender at tip; body soft flexible; thorax transverse widert [wider] at
base, its lateral edges acute; antennae longer than the head & thorax.
I, 3 - 4. Sampyrides. Palpi enlarged at termination; body soft straight, depressed, or but
slightly convex; thorax, simicircular [semicircular] or trapezoidal or nearly square, projects
either wholly or partially over the head.
I. 3 - 5 [Malyrides?]. Palpi short; filiform; mandible enlarged at point; body narrow
elongated; head only covered at base; thorax flat or bit slightly convex; generally
square; antennae usually serrated
I. 3 - 6 [Ilerii?]. Two of the palpi project, clavate; mandibles dentated; body usually
cylindrical; head & thorax narrower than the abdomen eyes emer-
ginate; antennae filiform, serrated.
