Head globular or 3-lobed; spikes one-flowered;
upper scales ovate, pointed; achenium ovate, compressed, short
pointed; stamens 2; involucre 3 leaved; leaves linear.
Culms 2 to 12 inches high. Flowers in August

Low grounds, particularly along rivers;
parts of Illinois, southern Indiana, & Ohio. Extends southward to Florida
