165 Carex monile Tuckerman.

Sterile spikes 2 to 4; fertile 2 or 3, long-cylindrical,
remote, on short smooth stalks, the lowest often nodding
and loosely flowered; perigynia roundish ovoid, nerved,
with a slender tapering 2-toothed beak, much longer and broader
than the oblong lanceolate awnless scale; leaves and
bracts longer than the culm, which is slender
sharply angled, rough, about 3 feet high.
Marshes.

Illinois, Ohio, & Michigan.
Extends thence north to the Arctic regions, and
east to N. England.
