Syn. C. Frankii Kunth. C. Shortii [steud?]. (not for Torr)

Sterile spikes solitary, small, linear, occassionally
with fertile flower at the apex; fertile flowers 3 to 6,
cylindrical, obtuse, erect very densely flowered, hte upper
approximated on a zigzag stem; perigynia [longer]
obovate, abruptly rough=beaked, nerved, spreading,—shorter
than the long=awned scales. Culm 18
inches to 2 feet high. Flowers in June.
Marshes

Southern Indiana and Ohio.
Extends southward to Texas
