Sterile spikes 1 to 3, cylindrical, slightly
bracteate, the upper on a long stalk, the others short
senile with rarely some fertile flowers; [pistillate]
fertile spikes 3 to 5 cylindrical, approximated, except
the lower which is remote on a long stalk;
perigynia senile, tapering from a much inflated
base into a long serrulate two=forked leak; scale
ovate cuspidate, scarcely half the length of the
perigynium; achenium rhomboid, with a
prominent node on the angles. Culm
2 to 3 feet high. Wet grounds
