160 Carex lupulina, Muhlenberg

Sterile spike solitary, erect, slender, sub-sessile bracteate;
fertile spikes 2 to 4 oblong-ovoid, erect, short-stalked,
approximate; perigynia tapering from an ovoid much-
inflated base into a long conical slightly serrulate
2-toothed beak, much longer than the lanceolate
awned scale. Culm 1 to 3 feet high; flowers
in May. Marshes and wet grounds.
