Sterile spike solitary, stalked; fertile spikes
2, globose, densely 25 to 30 flowered, separate and distinct, on
short exserted peduncles; perigynia spreading and
deflexed, tapering from an ovoid nerved base
into a long smooth and shining beak; bracts leaflike much exceeding the culm. Culm
3 feet high. Flowers in June. Low
meadows.

Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan.
Extends eastward to central N. York.
