Sterile spike solitary, cylindrical, pedunculate;
fertile spikes 2 to 4, long-cylindrical, on long recurved
stalks, sometimes slightly compound at base; perigynia
tapering from a stalked ovoid-triangular base, into a long
beak with two spreading teeth, diverging and finally
reflexed; scales ovate-lanceolate, rough awned,
about equalling the perigynium; leaves longer
than the culm, nerved, rough; culm very
rough on the edges, about 2 feet high. Flowers
in May. Border of Lakes & Marshes.

Ohio, and Michigan. Extends to the
Southern sttates.
