Syn. C. furcata Ell. (not of La Peyrouse)

Sterile spike solitary; fertile spikes 3 to 5 large,
the lowest sometimes remote, cylindrical, densely flowered,
on long drooping stalks; perigynia tapering from a
stalked ovoid-triangular base, into a long deeply 2-forked
beak, the teeth spreading; scales lanceolate, with
a long bristle-shaped awn, shorter than the perigynium;
culm, rough, three angled, 2 to 3 feet high,
Flowers in May. Swamps.
