irregularis Schw.
Sterile spike solitary, commonly sessile; fertile
spikes 2 to 4 oblong-ovoid, closely aggregate, nearly sessile,
densely flowered; perigynia ovoid, with a short, rather
abrupt, minutely notched beak, spreading horizontally
at maturity, a little longer than the ovate scale.
Culms 4 to 10 inches high. Flowers in May.
Wet rocks, especially on limestone.
At Two Rivers in Wisconsin.
Leach Lake, Minnesota; Ohio; Michigan;
and about Lake Superior. Extends north to
the Arctic regions and east to the N. England states.
A native also of Europe.
