Fertile spike solitary, shortly pedunculate; fertile
spikes 4 or 5 cylindrical rather distant, densely
flowered, the lower on long stalks; perigynia
ovoid-oblong, beaked, contracted at the base, nerved,
rough, spreading at maturity, longer than the
ovate, slightly ciliate brown scale; bracts without sheaths, exceeding the culm which with the leaves are
very rough. Culm 1 to 2 feet
high acutely 3 sides. Flowers in May.
Wet meadows and swamps

Michigan; About Lake Superior; thence
north to the arctic regions & east to the
New England states.
