137 Carex pubescens, Muhlenberg.

Sterile spike single usually sessile; fertile spikes
3 or 4 oblong, or cylindrical, erect, loose-flowered, the
lowest on a short stalk with a leafy bract about
equalling the culm; perigynia ovoid, triangular,
downy, attenuated at the base, with an abrupt
slender beak, a little longer than the ovate abruptly
pointed scale; culm, sheaths, & bracts hairy. Culm
1 to 2 feet high; flowers in May. Woods.

Wisconsin, Illinois, Southern Indiana,
Ohio and Michigan. Its geographical
extent is from Kentucky to the Arctic regions,
and eastward to N. England.
