Sterile spike single, pedunculate, club-shaped;
sterile spikes two, alternate, nearly sessile, approximate,
many flowered, perigynia ovate obtuse, pubescent,
culm scabrous; leaves rigid, sub-radical, those
of the culm very short, with purplish-brown
sheaths; scales & bract obtuse, brown, with a white border and keel, giving
the spikes a variegate appearance.
Rock County Wisconsin (Dr H. P. Sarlwell) -- Illinois
Michigan. Extends Eastward to Western New York and northward to the Arctic regions
and the N.W. Coast.
