135 Carex varia, Muhlenberg

Sterile spike single, sessile; fertile 2 or 3, mostly
distinct, on very short stalks, ovoid, 6 to 10 flowered,
the lowest with a green leaf-like bract; perigynia obovoid
with an abrupt distinctly toothed beak, about the
length of the pointed light brown scale. Culm 6 to 10
inches high; flowers in May. Woods & hill sides.

Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan
and about Lake Superior. It has been found
extending from S. Carolina to the arctic regions.
