Sterile spike solitary short, small, sessile; fertile
spikes 2 or 3 near the sterile, sessile, ovoid, about 4-
flowered, occasionally another on a long stalk near the
base of the culm; perigynia globose, 3-angled, tapering
at the base, minutely hairy, with a somewhat
elongated 2-toothed beak, deeply cleft on the inner
side, a little longer than the ovate pointed scale.
Culms 4 to 8 inches high: flowers in May.
In woods.

Michigan. Extends eastward to the
New England states.
