Spikes 3 to 5, short, on long peduncles, remote,
the lowest often near the base of the culm, the
highest staminate above, the others with a
few staminate flowers at the apex; perigynia
with a long attenuate base, and a minutely
notched orifice, about the length of the obovate,
abruptly awned or pointed dark purple scales; bracts
shorter than the spikes; achenium obovate, triquestrous,
style persistent, enlarged at the base; leaves all radical, flat. Culms
4 to 10 inches high dark purple at the base;
flowers in May. Hill-sides.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Ohio, Northward
to the Arctic regions.
