Syn. C. hirsuta, Will. C. viridula, Schw.
and Torrey, (not of Michaux)

Spikes 3 or 4 ovoid-oblong, approximate,
nearly sessile, the upper staminate below;
perigynea ovate-triangular, downey when
young, smooth at maturity, longer than
the ovate, pointed scale; leaves and
especially the sheaths hairy. Culms
12 to 18 inches high; flowers in May.
Moist meadows.

Illinois, Southern Indiana, Ohio and
Michigan. Extgends south to Louisiana,
north to the Arctic regions & east to
the N. England states.
