Syn. C. costata, Schw.

Sterile spike solitary, fertile at the summit;
fertile spikes oblong or cylindrical, on short
stalks, erect; perigynia ovate, hairy, rather
longer than the ovate, mucronate, pubescent
scale; achenium ovate, smooth, sharply triangular;
leaves and sheaths hairy. Culms one to three
feet high; flowers in May. Borders of
woods &c
