Sterile spike solitary, fertile above; fertile
spikes 2 to 4, rather loose-flowered, oblong-cylindrical,
rather thick on long peduncles; perigynia oblong contracted at each
end, nerved, slightly inflated; scale oblong
conspicuously awned, about the length of the
perigynium. Culms one to two feet high;
flowers in May. Meadows--
