113 Carex Illinoensis, Dewey.

Sterile spike solitary erect, long peduncled,
fertile spikes three remote, leafy bracteate, the
highest nearly sessile, ovate, close-flowered, the
two lower oblong, distant loose-flowered, and
pedunculate; perigynia ovate, conic, rather
obtuse, on the upper spike closer, larger, &
much longer than the ovate cuspidate scale,
on the lower spikes loose and a little longer
than the scale. Culm 12 to 16 inches
high; bracts long and leafy.
