107 Carex aurea, Nuttall.

Syn. C. pyriformis Schw.

Sterile spike solitary, pedunculate often with a few
fertile flowers at the top; Fertile spikes 3 or 4 oblong
loosely flowered, the lowest often remote; bracts
exceeding the culm; perigynia obovate or
pear-shaped obtuse, smooth, slightly inflated, longer than the ovate acute
scales; stigmas two; achenium lenticular.
Culms 6 to 12 inches high, flowers in
May. Wet springy places.

Along the shore of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin,
where it was first discovered by Mr Nuttall; also
in Michigan, and about Lake Superior.
Extends Eastward to Massachusetts, and
northward to the Arctic regions.
