Sterile spike solitary; fertile spikes one or
two, oblong 10 to 20 flowered, occasionally with sterile
flowers at the apex; bracts very narrow, the
lowest shorter than the culm; perigynia ovate,
about equalling the ovate mucronate scale.
Culms 10 to 18 inches high. Flowers in
May. Tamarac [tamarack] swamps.

Wisconsin, & Michigan. Found also
in the N. England states, and north to the
Arctic Regions.
