77 Carex chordohiza, Ehrhart.

Spikes 3 to 5 ovate, senile, aggregates into an ovoid head;
perigynia ovate, acuminate, a little longer than
the broadly ovate, acute scale; culms
with short apprened leaves below, naked
above, rising from long creeping roots.

About one foot high; flowers in May.

Waukesha County, Wisconsin. Found also in
Michigan and about Lake Superior, thence
northward to the Arctic regions.
