Spikes 5 to 7 closely clustered into an
oblong head; tracts ovate with a scabrous awn longer than the spikelets; perigynia orbicular-ovate, with a very short beak, compressed bi-dentate, prominently nerved or both sides, about the length of the ovate roughly pointed scales; achenium orbicular; style short with a bulbous base; Culms 12 to 18 inches high; Flowers in []. Grows in dry rocky places in woods &c-forming large tufts.

Illinois, Southern Indiana, Ohio, & Michigan. This species has been traced south to Texas, north to the Arctic regions and east to the New England states.
