Dr. Lapham,

Dear Sir,

You will have
observed in the papers, that, at the
late fire in Chicago, I lost my
Entire Collection of Nat. History
insects, shells, fossils, books and
private papers. Everything except
the collection I had in the
Exposition in Cincinnati. It
was a severe loss, and has quite
crippled one, for the collection of
butterflies alone number over
2,000 species. all your shells,
& many others went with the
wreck. Now if you could
spare one a few duplicates of
shells of Wisconsin, it would
be a great favor, & I would doubly
appreciate it at this time most
