I. You are a Longinus; and you are right. For the anatomist
of thought, and you and I shall make ourselves veritable histologists in
that line, words are his scalpel, that is to say, not his sole instrument
of dissection nor the one with which he makes sections for
the microscope, but his most serviceable tool for ordinary work.
Too much pains cannot be taken to make its edge keen and smooth,
and to keep it so. So I shall applaud your criticism, so long
as it is tempered ice-cold
