who, having grown rich as a merchant, enabled his
brother Simon to pursue his favorite studies by
lending the studious student a generous assistance. Thus likewise Johanan,
to whose immense erudition the compilation of
the Jerusalem Talmud is attributed, is said to have found a large
-hearted friend in the patriarch, Judah II. And what
is related about individual cases, the history of
institutions of learning in every spot where our
people congregate amply illustrates. more amply

who, whilst in the fruition of whatever makes exist-
-ence pleasurable, donated one million dollars of
his own to extend the usefulness of Columbia
College and insure its perpetuity. I do not men-
-tion a liberality similarly broad which bountifully increased
bountifully the funds of the University of Pennsyl-
-vania by a gift of half a million dollars because I do not
descant upon those splendid evidences of the love
of Knowledge, because, admirable as they are, con-
-vinced as I feel that they will vastly contribute
