My Darling Wife,

There's a mournful atmosphere tonight. We buried one of the babes today, I can hear their strange dirges vaguely from here. I regard these simple wretches pityingly and try to disbeleive what must be truth concerning their European counterparts in occupied Europe & Asia. It revolts my brain to see such unutterable misery & despair Japanese occupation reduced them to. You can't see sights as these and retain your smugness.
