I duly returned the book and it is I
presume at Camden Park.

Now, in the VI th volume of the Historical
Records of New South Wales, at the
close of the 2nd note at p345 I see it
stated that I am in error in describing
one Devine as an emancipated convict.

The editor himself is rather hazyed I think
when he comes to the conclusion (in
the same note) that there can be little
"doubt that the Philip Divine of the early lists is identical with
the Nicholas Devine of later years."

But I will let that pass by.

I have a dim kind of recollection that
in the Report of Johnston's trial in
England (in the book lent to me by
Sir W Mc) some witness stated
that Devine was an emancipated
convict, and that on that authority
I inserted the statement in my book
(at page 401 Vol I 2nd edition).

Now will you or some one at Camden
take the trouble to examine the book?

The man Devine who pulled down
the post (as there described) went to
England as a witness at Johnston's trial,
and John Macarthur produced
