I am heartily with you in applauding
the calm circumspection of Lord
Salisbury's conduct , and hope
earnestly that no illness will cloud
his capacity in these convulsed
times. The palpable absurdity of
Cleveland's message onthe Monroe
doctrine is demolished (i.e the message)
by Ld Sy [Lord Salisbury] without an angry or
offensive word. The message was
I think an electioneering kite
to influence the Presidential election
soon to take place. A wild and
wicked trick. Thank you for
saying that you will find out
all you can about the salt.

The diary in the Historical Records
gives the course taken from Prospect
and if you can establish the fact
that salt does not exist at the place
described the matter is solved.
If it does exist I must alter my History
in which I have floated the idea
which I still discredit; for if there had been
2 veins of salt (one 8 and another 12 ft thick) I cannot but think I should have heard of them.
