On the sofa I received and
from it I answer your kind
letter of 22nd Jany. Your account
of your military camp &
festivities is very interesting,
and I doubt not that the
pleasant relations you have
contributed to bring about
will produce good effects of an
enduring kind. It is to me
most charming to read
of them though I see not
the faces which reflect in
some measure the good which
you are doing. And the
affair is all the more notable
because of the distressing
times which you are undergoing.
