I was struck by what Jamie told
me about the share system
which you have adopted. So far
as I can understand it furnishes
a happy solution of many difficulites.

In London Mr. Livesey applied a
kindred system in a Gas Company
& by means of it, though with much
contest overcame a strike which other
men wanted to force upon his people.

Have you seen Mallock's book
'Labour and the Popular Welfare'?
There is nothing in it which is not
in the Duke of Argyll's Unseen Foundations,
but it is more compact - and very good.
His fourth term "Ability" hardly satisfies
me. Mental Guidance would be
better, but one word would be still
better if one could hit upon it.
Design in the Paley sense would do, but
every one would not think of it in that
sense. Genius might please some but
not all. This is what you and your
forefathers have contributed at Camden
and if you can show that it raises
a happy tenantry you furnish, just such
an object lesson as the times requires.
