- In his struggle against rising Protestantism Charles V
prohibited in his domains all suspect Bibles (in Latin,
French + dutch) adn asked the Theological Faculty of
the Louvain Univ. to prepare duly authorized + orthodox
ed. in these languages. The Latin Bible appeared
first (1547) at Louvain by B. Gravius in folio. Beginning
with his first Bible ed. in 1559, Plantin followed this
Louvain version. Revised in 1574, all Plantin's
subsequent Latin Bibles are based on this edition.
