Johnson's Shakespeare was 1st contemplated in
1745, when the lexicographer issued his
pamphlet on Macbeth. In 1756 Johnson published
proposals for a new Shakespeare + began
taking subscriptions for the work, to be published
by Christmas, 1757. Numerous delays occurred,
+ Johnson was publicly taunted for his
procrastination. Finally the presented (1765)
was released. The preface immediately attracted
admiration. Adam Smith called it "the most
manly piece of criticism that was ever published
in any country."
