Giuseppe Garibaldi, Itlay.
Garibaldi was an Italian patriot who was born in France, July 4th, 1807. It is said that in fighting for Italian independence, Garibaldi drew a line on the ground and said to the soldiers that all who were willing to starve, suffer exposure, and die for Italy to step across the line but those who were not willing to do so to leave the army. Every man so it was said, stepped across the line.
What is not known to most boys in this country is that Garibaldi fled from Italy once when he was defeated and reached South America where he fought for the freedom of Uruguay. He was such a brilliant leader that he known as the hero of Montevideo. It was in South America that he married his first wife, Anita, a wonderful woman. At a later time Garibaldi came to the United States and commanded a merchant ship.
Over and over again Garibaldi met defeat but before his death Italian independence and unity was achieved.
In Milan there is a large monument to Garibaldi in front of the magnificent Sforza palace. The rock we have was picked up in front of this monument.
