Dear Mr. Holmes:

In reply to your good letter of July 17th we
are sending you under separte cover the rock which you re-
quested. I am also enclosing one of our present year's camp
folders which will give you an idea as to the nature of our
camping activities.

[three red vertical lines beside second parargraph at the start and end of paragraph, lines cover the length of this paragraph]
This rock is being sent as the gift of the boys
who made up the personel of our Fourth Camping Period this summer.
The lads chipped in pennies and nickels for the postage which is
considerable for such a pebble at this distance. But all were happy
to have a part in bring the spirit [to typed over] of Hawaii nei to South Caral [o typed over] ina.

This rock is taken from our campsite. It is one of
thousands which make up an old stone wall built there many years ago
by old-time Hawaiians. It is lava rock of the type designated as
"pahoe-hoe". There rocks are or rather were gathered by the hundreds
of thousands in ancient days and used in the construction of religious
a [r typed over] ltars or "heiaus" on which sacrifices and services took place. The
world for rock [underlined in ink] in Hawaiian i [n typed over] s ---"pohaku" -- pō ha (as in ah) ku (or koo).

We are in the midst of getting some new equipment o[f typed over] n
our site and so are happy to wish you all kinds of happiness and fine
success in your splendid undertaking.

Yours very truly,
