The Maine Monument, Havana, Cuba.

Most boys of United States know something of Cuba. It belonged to
Spain until United States went to war with Spain and Cuba achieved inde-
pence. This war made United States a world power. Although the citizens
of United States were greated aroused by the treatment of the Cubans by
the [smudged]:Spanish, it was the sinking of the battleship Maine in the harbor
of Havana which brought matters to a crisis.

At the close of the war, United States gave a Cuba beautiful monu-
ment called the Maine Monument. This monument was blown down by a severe
storm. Mr. & Mrs. Cecil Morris, of Greenville, secured a piece of the
[smudged]:original monument when in Cuba and kindly gave it to camp.

The new monument was erected by Cuba on the site of the original one.
The monument is located in Havana said by many travellers to be the most
beautiful city in the world. The accompanying photographs were also sec-
ured through the kindness of Mr. Morris who has done much for this camp.
