The Assagai from Africa.
The assagai from Africa are the two wooden speak-like implements which are over the door on the west side of the lodge. They were kindly given to us by Mr. Kingsley Pearse, of Greenville.
The assagai are used by the Zulus, Kfirs, and other native tribes of Africa. They are made of the Assagai tree which is similar to our dogwood. The natives can throw these spears with remarkable speed and accuracy. Sometimes the assagai are tipped with iron or flint and sometimes dipped in the juice of some poison to make them more deadly.
