2. A professional doctoral degree in Social Work at
Chapel Hill.

The Ph.D. Degree in Social Work was authorized in 1939 and
two awards of the doctorate were made. In 1947 the doctoral
program was discontinued in order to concentrate upon the profes-
sional Master's degree. The growing need for social workers with
advanced training has made it desirable once again to offer doctoral
work in this field. Because of the professional emphasis now given
to advanced work in this area, a professional doctorate is more
appropriate than the Ph.D. Therefore, the degree of Doctor of
Social Work is proposed for this program of advanced training.

Mr. Hill moved that the degree programs as presented by Dr.
Anderson be authorized. Mrs. Burgwyn seconded the motion and it was
unanimously approved.

Proposals of North Carolina State Alumni

Mr. Victor Bryant, Chairman of the Special Committee appointed
by Governor Sanford, made a preliminary report on the above subject.
No action was taken.

The meeting then adjourned.
