"Dr. King did his undergraduate work at Chapel Hill and he holds the M. A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago. During his years of service as Associate Dean of the Graduate School of the University, he became intimately acquainted with the personnel and programs of our three institutions, and his knowledge of other state educational institutions is unexcelled within the University. He has also previously served the Consolidated Office as coordinator for a study of teacher education.

"Dr. King is just now completing his Chairmanship of a special faculty committee that has engaged in a year-long, self-study of the University at Chapel Hill in preparation for the forthcoming visit of an accreditation group. He was general editor in 1958 of a long-range planning study for the University at Chapel Hill entitled, 'Planning for the Future.' He assisted in the development of the academic program of Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount and is a trustee of that institution. He has been active in the work of the North Carolina College Conference, in shaping the academic programs of North Carolina College, in advising with the National Space Administration, and in the work cf state, regional, and national educational organizations. Because of his long experience and capable administrative work, Dr. King is remarkably well qualified to serve as Vice President for Institutional Studies of the University.

"This appointment is effective March 1, 1964, with the understanding that Dr. King will continue to devote whatever time is necessary to complete his duties in connection with the visit of the accreditation group to Chapel Hill in March and to get the 1964 Summer Session under way for Chancellor Aycock. Also it is understood that Dr. King will retain his professorship in the School of Education of the University at Chapel Hill.

"Mr. Chairman, I recommend the appointment of Dr. Arnold K. King as Vice President for Institutional Studies of the University effective March 1, 1964."

On motion of Mr. Pearsall, seconded by Mr. Simpson, the appointment of Dr. Arnold K. King as Vice President for Institutional Studies was unanimously approved.

Dr. King and Mr. Weaver were invited into the meeting and they received enthusiastic applause.

Mr. Robert Shoffner was asked to stand and be recognized.
