North Carolina State - Doctoral Degree in Engineering Mechanics

Dr. Andersnn presented the following recommendation:

RECOMMENDATION FOR APPROVAL OF A DOCTORAL PROGRAM IN ENGINEERING MECHANICS AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE

The Graduate Executive Council, at its meeting on November 4, recommended the approval of a doctoral program in engineering mechanics at North Carolina State. This recommendation was based upon a thorough study of the program by a committee made up of two representatives from each of the three campuses of the University.

Engineering Mechanics is a subject matter area basic to much of engineering. It deals with such subjects as dynamics, elasticity, plasticity, fluid mechanics and the deformation and flow of matter. The research achievements in the field of engineering mechanics are the foundations upon which much of modern engineering rests.

The proposed doctoral program in engineering mechanics is interdisciplinary in that the direction of the work leading to the degree will be assumed by an interdepartmental committee composed of faculty members from the departments of engineering mechanics, mechanical engineering and civil engineering.

The recommendation of the Graduate Executive Council has the approval of the President and the Executive Committee is hereby requested to authorize the degree.

On motion of Mrs. Lathrop, duly seconded, the above recommendation for Doctoral Program in Engineering Mechanics at North Carolina State was approved.
