The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of The University of North Carolina met in regular session in the Governor's Office, Raleigh, North Carolina, at 10:30 o'clock, A. M. , Eastern Standard Time, on Monday, July 8, 1963, Governor Sanford presiding; Arch T. Allen, Secretary, Billie Curtis, Assistant Secretary.

The following members were present: Mrs. Lathrop, Mrs. Burgwyn, Messrs. Umstead, Bryant, Hill, Barber, Mintz, Taylor, Maynard and Wicker.

The following members were absent: Mr. T. J. Pearsall and Mr. G. N. Noble.

Also present were: President Friday, Vice President Anderson, Business Officer & Treasurer Shepard, Secretary Weaver, and Chancellors Aycock and Singletary.

Minutes:

The minutes of the last meeting were approved without reading, a copy having been mailed to each member of the Board.

President Friday was recognized and he called on the Chancellors for their reports.

The University at Chapel Hill

Chancellor Aycock presented the following report and recommendations for the University at Chapel Hill:

Appointments

Duane Francis Taylor, as Professor, School of Dentistry, with salary of $16,000. Born, Iowa City, Iowa, 1925. Married. Six children. Education: B.S.E. (Chemical Engineering) 1949, andM.S.E. (metallurgical Engineering) 1950, University of Michigan. Experience: Head, Department Dental Materials 1950-54, School of Dentistry, University of Washington; Lecturer 1955-61, Army Dental School; Lecturer 1957-61, Naval Graduate School. Interviewed by the Dean of the School of Dentistry and his faculty.

Newton Underwood, as Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Shhool of Public Health, with salary of $12,000 beginning September 1, 1963. Born, Atlanta, Georgia, 1906. Married. Three children. Education: B.S. 1926, Emory University; M.S. 1930 and Ph.D. 1934, Brown University. Experience: Instructor 1932-36, Hood College; Research, 1941-42, Columbia University; Physicist 1948-49, Union Carbon and Carbide Co.; Instructor to Professor 1936-50, Vanderbilt University; Professor 1950 to present time, North Carolina State College; Work with Lockheed Nuclear Reactor, Dawsonville, Georgia, summers 1957-60. Gerald D. Bell, *as Instructor or Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, with salary of $7, 000, beginning September 1, 1963. Born, Denver, Colorado, November 23, 1937. Married.
